Summary
In world war one trenches were dug on the frontline's to help protect against enemy artillery and machine gun fire. It was a very defensive and sometimes boring style of war. It was stalemate. There were many downsides to trenches because of the harsh conditions. Some of the downsides were diseases and infestation. Trench warfare was used through all of world war one.
